Rio Ngumoha has been a name on Liverpool fans’ lips for about a year now.

Ever since swapping the Chelsea academy for Anfield back in summer 2024 - aged only 15 - excitement has been high over the young English forward.

Nguomha rose quickly through Liverpool’s under-16 and U18 ranks - earning game time early in his tenure at the club with the Premier League 2 side as well as in the UEFA Youth League.

It didn’t take him long to make an impact with the first team either - making his debut back in January during an FA Cup game against Accrington.

Ngumoha enjoys Liverpool breakout

Having played a full part in the club’s preseason campaign - where he was particularly impressive - Ngumoha earned a full-time promotion to Arne Slot’s senior squad.

He sat on the bench for the season opener against Bournemouth last week before his breakout performance against Newcastle on Monday night.

If only Liverpool fans knew the name of Rio Ngumoha before Monday then the whole world knows it now. With the game finely balanced - heading into the 10th minute of additional time - Ngumoha popped up with a brilliant winner.

New contract imminent for Ngumoha

In the process he usurped Michael Owen as the youngest Premier League goalscorer in Liverpool history. What a week it’s been for Ngumoha - who will celebrate his 17th birthday on Friday.

And that too should bring another landmark - a first-ever professional contract. Having signed for the club’s academy aged only 15 - Ngumoha wasn’t at that stage eligible for a pro deal.

But the club will move fast - as they did in the case of Trey Nyoni - by offering a new contract to the winger as soon as possible.

Ngumoha contract confirmed by Fabrizio Romano

That was confirmed by transfer supremo Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel following the game on Monday night. “Liverpool are already preparing a new contract for this boy,” the Italian expert said.

“There will be conversations very soon, accelerating for Rio Ngumoha. But Liverpool are very happy with his attitude, very happy with his potential, not only with his goal. “And so Rio Ngumoha is going to be absolutely a star in the future.”

Ngumoha is likely to sign a short-term deal as he is still under 18 - which the club will then look to extend in 2026.
