Lee Carsley’s promising start as interim England manager has not stopped the Football Association (FA) from considering appointing an external candidate to succeed Gareth Southgate.

According to The Telegraph, the FA has held discussions with Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard.

Carsley is currently considered the favourite, but the FA is keen to explore all options before making a final decision.

His side has impressed with excellent performances across the park in his first two games in charge. He secured 2-0 wins against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Carsley’s next challenges are against Greece and Finland in October, followed by the return matches against Greece and Ireland in November.

Next on his itinerary will be integrating Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer into the fold without disrupting the team’s balance.

The FA will continue its search for a permanent manager until the end of Carsley’s interim tenure. The goal is to appoint a successor before the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

There have been rumours that they are keen to appoint Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, but there is no clarity regarding his future.

The FA’s shortlist of potential England managers is underwhelming. It lacks international experience and the pedigree to take on one of the most demanding jobs in world football.

Carsley has shown promise, but he’s still a relative newcomer to management at the highest level.
