The arrival of Alvaro Carreras has significantly boosted the expectations from Real Madrid’s left-back department with the new signing becoming the club’s second-costliest defensive acquisition in history.

Xabi Alonso and Co. have complete faith in the Spanish star and see him as having the required quality to become Real Madrid’s next big full-back after Marcelo. Needless to say, he will serve as a regular starter under the new manager.

The player’s arrival, however, puts pressure on both Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia. Of them, the latter would appear to be better placed on the manager’s pecking order, especially after his great campaign at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mendy’s entourage are confident

As relayed by Mario Cortegana in a recent update, Mendy’s camp is confident that their client is a better option than Garcia and that he will move back up the manager’s pecking order swiftly.

Further, they insist that he is not afraid of the competition with Carreras and that he can compete with the former Benfica star for a regular starting spot at the club.

With Real Madrid pushing for the departure of one of the two left-backs from last season, Mendy has reportedly shown no signs of any interest in leaving Real Madrid. The Frenchman is confident of earning back his place in the team.

The 30-year-old defender’s fitness last season was a constant worry and prevented him from enjoying any form of continuity under Carlo Ancelotti.

In fact, his last appearance for Real Madrid came back in April in the Copa del Rey final.

Throughout last season, Mendy managed to make just 12 starts for Real Madrid in La Liga and had only one goal contribution to show in that duration.

He averaged just over four defensive actions per game and oversaw three clean sheets.
