Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Chris Wilder's sacking by Sheffield United
Don Goodman expects Chris Wilder to receive offers from Championship clubs quite quickly following his Sheffield United dismissal.
The Blades made the decision to part ways with the 57-year-old this summer following the club’s failure to gain promotion to the Premier League.
The Yorkshire outfit finished third in the table, with 90 points to their name, but lost the play-off final 2-1 to Sunderland, consigning them to at least another year in the second tier.
Sheffield United have already confirmed Ruben Selles as his replacement, with the club eyeing a place back in the Premier League next term.
Goodman has branded Wilder’s sacking by Sheffield United as extremely harsh, highlighting their high points total.
He believes that the experienced coach will have no shortage of offers, if he decides to jump straight back into management at the earliest possible opportunity.
“I think the Chris Wilder sacking is harsh in the extreme, really,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“I don’t think ever before, if you take the points won on the football pitch, which is 92 points, that has never ever failed to get you automatic promotion.
“So, it does feel a little bit harsh.
“I think they are probably analysing the early/mid-part of the season where Sheffield United were grinding results out but nevertheless it’s all about winning.
“Ultimately, Chris Wilder at Championship level has proven he is a winner.
“So, I don’t know whether he’ll want a break or if he’ll want to get straight back in, but I don’t expect he’ll be short of offers.”
Sheffield United finished 10 points behind second place Burnley, and beat Bristol City 6-0 in their play-off semi-final, but were undone in their promotion pursuit by Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.
Wilder has a vast amount of Championship experience, and this latest run at Bramall Lane showed he can still work to a high standard at this level.
He had previously underwhelming stints at the likes of Watford and Middlesbrough, but he has repaired his reputation with his return to Sheffield United.
There is no doubt that once clubs start getting nervous next season, then someone will make the jump for Wilder.
If he wants a quick return to football management, then he is likely to have no shortage of options by the time September and October rolls around, given the work he did with the Blades last season.
Whether the Blades will live to regret this decision only waits to be seen, although Ruben Selles will be under instant pressure to deliver and take the club back to the promised land at the second time of asking.
