Rangers are not wasting any time as the summer transfer window begins to heat up and activity ramps up around the corridors of Ibrox. With new manager Russell Martin intent on reshaping his squad ahead of what will be another gruelling campaign at home and abroad there is plenty of talk and speculation doing the rounds among the support.

We can exclusively reveal that Rangers have made a move on Racing Union’s striker Yann Mabella. The Congolese-born forward who is currently the joint top scorer in the Luxembourg National Division is firmly on Rangers’ radar and the club has begun early contact to explore a possible deal. At 28 years of age Mabella brings power pace and a clinical edge that Rangers were lacking up front last season particularly in the business end of the campaign.

Mabella hit 22 goals for Racing Union and has turned heads across the continent with a number of clubs circling. But Rangers are among the first to express real interest and our sources indicate that initial discussions have already taken place. Rangers target Mabella has even been compared in some quarters to Thierry Henry which is both premature and exaggerated but highlights the buzz around him.

This interest comes off the back of an already intensive period of scouting and evaluation. Rangers transfer strategy is focusing this window on untapped markets and Mabella fits the bill as a strong goalscorer from a less glamorous league. He would not command the kind of fee a striker from France or England might and that makes him a viable and realistic option for Martin’s rebuild – he could be had for as little as £500,000. Previous reports suggested he was being watched but this is the first real evidence of direct movement.

Whether Rangers push ahead with a concrete bid or remain at the enquiry stage remains to be seen but this one is very much alive and developing.
