Exclusive finally puts a date on “devastated” star’s return date – transfer plans must be updated

Last night’s Enzo Maresca press conference was frustrating for Chelsea fans on one front – they were desperate for an update on Reece James, who picked up an injury during the international break, but got little out of the manager, who wouldn’t put a date or a day on a potential return.

We were still left wondering whether this was a matter of days, weeks or months. Well, luckily now Telegraph Chelsea writer Matt Law has used his contacts to find out a little more.

Law writes that this hamstring issue will keep James out until at least the end of December, with a scan clearly revealing some significant damage. The New Year is only just over a month away, but it’s a vital period and a brutal blow to poor James mentally as he is forced to confront a career which now looks like it will never come close to its potential.

Law writes that James is “devastated” by the latest injury, and notes that the club captain has only played 654 minutes since being given that honour 15 months ago.

The club are apparently determined not to “focus on a set timeframe,” which perhaps explains Maresca’s circumspection last night.

Sporting directors must rethink right-back balance after latest James setbacks

As we’ve said before, we won’t ever be able to count on James now – his body has proved time and again it can’t be trusted. The surgery he had a year ago doesn’t seem to have solved anything.

We’ve just got to try and enjoy him when he’s fit and playing – but be aware that just James and Malo Gusto isn’t enough right sided cover for a squad playing in multiple competitions. A second right back to rotate with Gusto is needed – any James availability is just a bonus, and shouldn’t be relied upon.
