Don Goodman has given his verdict on what the four teams promoted from League Two need to do to survive in League One next season.

Pundit Don Goodman believes Doncaster Rovers, Port Vale, Bradford City and AFC Wimbledon should take inspiration from Stockport County as they prepare to return to League One.

Doncaster sealed their return to League One as they won the League Two title last season, and the other automatic promotion places were taken by Port Vale and Bradford, with the latter securing their spot in the top three through Antoni Sarcevic's dramatic 96th-minute winner against Fleetwood Town on the final day.

The trio will be joined in the third tier by Wimbledon, who overcame Notts County in their play-off semi-final before beating Walsall 1-0 in the final at Wembley last month, with Myles Hippolyte's first-half strike ensuring the victory for Johnnie Jackson's side.

As they gear up for life back in League One, Doncaster, Port Vale, Bradford and Wimbledon will be hoping to avoid the fate of Crawley Town, who suffered an immediate relegation back to League Two last season after winning promotion the previous year.

However, the three sides that were promoted with the Red Devils fared much better, with Mansfield Town finishing in lower mid-table, Stockport County coming third and Wrexham claiming second place as they recorded a historic third consecutive promotion, so there are plenty of reasons for the quartet to be optimistic about what they could achieve next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said that Doncaster, Port Vale, Bradford and Wimbledon should not be fearful of League One, providing they strengthen their squads sufficiently this summer, and he pointed to Stockport as an example of how a club should build on promotion from League Two.

"It's not for me to be giving advice to anybody, but I do feel that the gap between League Two and League One is arguably the smallest to bridge," Goodman said.

"We've seen teams frequently come from League Two into League One and do well, Stockport County are a brilliant example of that.

"I don't think League One should hold loads of fears.

"It depends what their ambition is, but, for me, when I look at those four, I think the first port of call has to be survival and consolidation.

"In order to do that, it's about recruiting better quality players, probably into the starting XI, rather than the squad."

Bradford City may have the best chance of emulating Stockport County

As Goodman says, the first priority for Doncaster, Port Vale, Bradford and Wimbledon will be to stay in League One next season, but it is possible that they may have higher aspirations than that.

Despite being out of the third tier for six years, which is longer than any of their fellow promoted teams, the Bantams will be expected to fare the best out of the quartet, and chairman Stefan Rupp claimed that the budget for the upcoming season could enable the club to challenge for the play-offs.

It has been a busy start to the summer for Bradford, with Curtis Tilt, Joe Wright, Max Power and Josh Neufville joining the club, and while it will be tough for them to emulate Stockport's achievements from last season, it is clear they are going into League One with big ambitions.
