Don Goodman has given his reaction to Huddersfield Town completing the signings of defenders Joe Low and Sean Roughan.
Pundit Don Goodman admitted he has been impressed by Huddersfield Town's summer transfer business so far after they completed the signings of defenders Joe Low and Sean Roughan.
Huddersfield made the controversial decision to part company with head coach Michael Duff in March, despite sitting just outside the play-off places at the time, and after a nightmare end to the season under caretaker Jon Worthington that saw them lose their final six games, they finished the campaign in an underwhelming 10th place.
After a lengthy search for Duff's permanent replacement, the Terriers named Lee Grant as their new boss last month, with the 42-year-old leaving his role as a coach at Ipswich Town to take up his first managerial role at the John Smith's Stadium, and he has certainly been backed in the transfer market by owner Kevin Nagle.
Having already completed the signings of Preston North End midfielder Ryan Ledson and Ipswich winger Marcus Harness, Town's summer rebuild continued on Tuesday as they announced the arrival of defenders Joe Low and Sean Roughan from Wycombe Wanderers and Lincoln City respectively.
Low scored four goals in 42 appearances for Wycombe last season as they finished fifth in League One, and he rejected several "substantial" contract offers from the Chairboys in order to join Huddersfield, while they fought off competition from fellow promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers to land the signature of Roughan, who played every minute in the league last season for Lincoln.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman praised Huddersfield for their strong early transfer business, and he claimed that Low and Roughan could help to make the Terriers as solid as the likes of Birmingham City and Wrexham, who won automatic promotion from League One last season.
"It looks to me like Huddersfield are putting together a really decent squad," Goodman said.
"They're going in early and getting their business done, and these two boys have added to Marcus Harness in the forward areas and Ryan Ledson in that midfield area, two very experienced lads who have played a lot of football at a higher level.
"These two young defenders are just padding out that squad.
"It looks like a good project.
"When you look at the top two last season, Birmingham City conceded 31 goals and Wrexham conceded 34 goals, whereas Huddersfield, who finished 10th, conceded 55 goals.
"That's a gap that needs bringing if they want to climb up the league.
"They are two astute signings, I would say."
As Goodman says, conceding 55 goals is not good enough for a team who are looking to challenge for promotion, so one of Grant's first tasks after taking over at Huddersfield will be to tighten up the defence.
Low and Roughan were two of the best defenders in League One last season, and it could be argued that both players deserved a move to the Championship this summer, so it is a huge coup from the Terriers to convince them to make the move to the John Smith's Stadium.
With Harness and Ledson also arriving in West Yorkshire in recent weeks, Town are certainly sending a message to the rest of the division about their intentions next season, and if the rest of their transfer business is of a similar standard, they will be viewed as one of the promotion favourites.
