Ex-Rangers chairman Dave King offers surprise backing to Ibrox board

Ex-Rangers chairman Dave King definitely had a thing or two to say today, with a large and ‘juicy’ statement covering just about everything Ibrox, and in yet another indicator of ‘agreement’ with Ibrox Noise, the South African-based business defended chairman John Bennett.

Ibrox Noise has conceded that Bennett has made errors, absolutely, but that he is one of us and he’s ended up having to do about three men’s job in one – he’s out of his depth in that regard.

And King appears to agree:

“I know John Bennett is devastated by current events and is working immensely hard behind the scenes.”

This is not something that someone who condemns the chairman would say.

The ‘sack the board’ vitriol isn’t helping anyone, and Bennett has been and is doing everything he can to steer things in the right direction.

But he is only one man, who is borderline doing this blindfolded and isn’t supposed to be Rangers CEO, but is having to take that job as ‘acting’ for the time being.

King appears to be backing the man up, in a change of tact from a former board member who used to frequently criticised the suits – it appears he, like Ibrox Noise, has recognised this isn’t the same board of yesterday, of the likes of Douglas Park et al – this is a different board, including from himself, with a different CEO and a different chairman.

And no Sporting Director.

The point?

Bennett isn’t the bad guy – we have massive misgivings about Alastair Johnston and Graeme Park, but aside them, we’re not really seeing what the board has actually done outright wrong, excepting the stadium fiasco which really was a balls up.

And even King, formerly a huge critic, is backing up the current chairman at least.
