Bayer Leverkusen are considering Erik ten Hag as a candidate to replace Xabi Alonso as the club’s head coach.
Alonso has been heavily linked with succeeding Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid manager next season. Ancelotti is expected to leave the Spanish side at the end of the current campaign and Alonso is the club’s number one target.
Earlier this month, Leverkusen revealed that the club have a gentleman’s agreement allowing Alonso to leave for any of his former sides, including Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
According to Kicker, Ten Hag is on Leverkusen’s shortlist of potential replacements. The 55-year-old has been out of work since being sacked at Manchester United in October 2024.
He has worked in an advisory role at Borussia Dortmund in recent months and has prior experience of German football, having coached Bayern Munich’s reserve side from 2013 to 2015.
Ten Hag built his coaching reputation at Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie titles and led the side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.
He moved to Manchester United in 2022 and ended the club’s six-year trophy drought with League Cup success in his debut season. Ten Hag lifted the FA Cup in his second campaign but disappointing Premier League performances saw him sacked last autumn.
Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is also understood to be of interest to Leverkusen.
