Aldo Serena feels that Mehdi Taremi has had a brilliant start in preseason, but Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram are still the starters at Inter Milan.

The former Nerazzurri, AC Milan, and Juventus gave his thoughts in an interview published in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter signed Iranian international Taremi on a free transfer from Porto this summer.

Taremi had spent four years with the Portuguese giants. But he was available on a free transfer at the end of his contract, and Inter didn’t need a second invitation.

Inter had already tried to sign Taremi last summer. They decided not to considering the fee that Porto had been demanding.

But there is no doubt that now that Taremi is finally an Inter player, the club see him as having an important role for next season.

Inter have signed the 32-year-old to give the team far greater strength in depth.

But Taremi himself won’t just be seeing his role as being a squad player or backup option.

The Iranian will know that there will be opportunities for him to start. The season will be a long one with many big fixtures in a relatively short period.

And Taremi will even be eyeing up a place in the lineup for Inter’s biggest matches.

Serena: “Taremi Has Started Brilliantly, But Lautaro & Thuram Still The Starters At Inter”

Former striker Serena commented that “I think Lautaro has shown his authority with the captain’s armband.”

“He’s shown that he feels a sense of responsibility after Lukaku’s exit. He knows he has to give this team certainty.”

“There’s no reason to question that he’s central to the team,” Serena said of Martinez.

“From a tactical perspective as well. He has to lead the line, as he did last season, not move around in different positions.”

Serena said that “The fact that Taremi has the characteristics of an out-and-out centre-forward and started preseason brilliantly prior to his injury shouldn’t affect Lautaro.”

“And the starting pair with Thuram should also not come into question,” Serena argued.

“Because that pairing has speed and the ability to attack space in behind from the Frenchman.”

“He’s also good at beating his man to get into open space,” Serena said of Thuram.
