The Tykes have confirmed the arrival of the Irishman as part of their summer transfer business.

Conor Hourihane is looking to build a team capable of fighting for promotion to the Championship in the upcoming season after being appointed manager in March.

The 37-year-old spent the last two seasons with Notts County, where he scored 29 goals from 72 appearances in League Two.

Barnsley confirmed the news that McGoldrick has signed for the club with a message to supporters on their social media.

The Yorkshire outfit welcomed the forward after he agreed terms on a one-year deal after departing the Magpies earlier in the summer.

Cashin issued his response to the announcement, replying on Instagram: “All the best mate.”

McGoldrick spent one season at Derby, where he scored 22 goals from 39 games in League One, with the team narrowly missing out on a play-off place under Paul Warne.

Both Cashin and McGoldrick have since departed Pride Park, with the defender currently plying his trade with Brighton.

Barnsley will be hoping that the striker has a similar impact at Oakwell as he did during his one-year stay with the Rams.

Barnsley’s summer business

McGoldrick is the fourth addition at Barnsley so far this summer, with the club looking to bounce back after an underwhelming League One campaign.

The Tykes fell to 12th in the table, with Hourihane taking charge in March after Darrell Clarke’s dismissal.

Barnsley have also added Reyes Cleary to the squad on a permanent basis, with Nathanael Ogbeta and Murphy Cooper arriving on loan.

Hourihane’s side will face a trip to Plymouth Argyle for their first league game of the new season, with the sides set to meet on 2 August.

McGoldrick addition has potential for Barnsley

Barnsley didn’t have as much of an issue scoring goals last season, but the speculation over Davis Keillor-Dunn and Jon Russell’s futures means that bringing in McGoldrick does make sense.

He is now 37, so his minutes will need to be managed as he won’t be able to play every minute of every game.

But if his goal output can be similar to his last few seasons, particularly his year at Derby, then he could prove a very smart signing for one year.

He’s arrived as a free agent, so the minimal cost does keep this as a relatively risk-free signing, and McGoldrick will also know Hourihane well from their time together as teammates at Derby, as well as with the Ireland team.
