Everton begin a historic new era on Sunday as they play their first ever competitive match at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, welcoming Brighton & Hove Albion.
The fixture is a landmark occasion for the Toffees, but David Moyes’ side are under pressure to secure a result after an opening-day defeat. Brighton, meanwhile, will be aiming to spoil the party and claim their own first victory of the season.
The match presents a classic clash of managerial philosophies. David Moyes’ trademark defensive organisation will go up against the intricate, possession-based football of Brighton’s Fabian Hürzeler. Hürzeler has insisted his side are “not there to be the nice club” for the stadium’s opening day, signalling a determined approach.
David Moyes is facing a full-blown defensive crisis. He confirmed that full-backs Nathan Patterson and Vitaliy Mykolenko have been ruled out, alongside centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. However, new signing Adam Aznou has returned to training and could be available for an immediate debut. Star loanee Jack Grealish is also pushing for his first start.
Fabian Hürzeler has confirmed that Jack Hinshelwood is available for selection after missing the season opener.
However, the manager faces uncertainty over the future of Julio Enciso, admitting there are “rumours and talks” about a potential move. In contrast, Hürzeler stated he is “very confident” that midfielder Matt O’Riley will remain at the club.
Everton’s season began with a concerning 1-0 defeat at Leeds. The passive performance highlighted the manager’s concerns about his stretched squad. The pressure is on to deliver a much-improved performance for the historic first match at their new stadium.
Brighton began their season with a frustrating 1-1 draw at Fulham, a game they dominated but failed to win after conceding a late equaliser. Hürzeler is well aware of the challenge ahead at Everton, describing David Moyes’ teams as “always very organised” and difficult to create chances against.
Everton predicted XI: Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Garner; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Gueye, McNeil; Grealish, Beto.
Brighton predicted XI: Verbruggen; Wieffer, Van Hecke, Dunk, De Cuyper; Baleba, Ayari; Minteh, O’Riley, Mitoma; Rutter.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Ultra HDR in the UK. Coverage begins at 1:30pm BST ahead of the 2:00pm kick-off. Subscribers can also stream the action live via the Sky Go app.
