European Golden Shoe standings: Gyokeres powers past Salah | OneFootball

The race for the European Golden Shoe is heating up with a new frontrunner after the weekend’s action.

Viktor Gyokeres has moved into the lead after the Swedish striker’s phenomenal season continued at Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres scored four times as Sporting thrashed Boavista 5-0 in the Primeira Liga, extending his record to 38 goals in just 32 league appearances.

Despite Portugal’s inferior co-efficient (1.5 point per goal) compared to Europe’s top-five leagues (2 points per goal), he’s moved a point ahead Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. Gyokeres has now scored 52 goals in all competitions this season and has averaged a Primeira Liga goal every 66 minutes.

He’s aiming to become just the fourth player to win the European Golden Shoe while representing a team outside of Europe’s top five leagues, since the co-efficient method was introduced in 1997. Only Nikos Machlas (Vitesse Arnhem – 1997/98), Mario Jardel (Sporting Lisbon – 1998/99) and Henrik Larsson (Celtic – 2000/01) have previously achieved the feat.

Though third in the standings, a hamstring injury is likely to impact Robert Lewandowski’s hopes of a third Golden Shoe success this season. Last season’s winner, Harry Kane, is fourth.

AS Monaco forward Mika Biereth is a surprise name in the standings. The 22-year-old scored 11 league goals across the first half of the campaign with Sturm Graz, before a mid-season move to France. He’s since scored 12 goals in 12 Ligue 1 appearances for Monaco, including three hat-tricks.
