The 18-year-old was introduced at the start of extra-time with the final level at 2-2. Moments later, Jonathan Rowe headed in Tyler Morton’s cross to secure the title for Lee Carsley’s side. Nwaneri replaced James McAtee and played the entire additional period, helping England close out the tense match.
Harvey Elliott and former Arsenal youngster, Omari Hutchinson, had given England a commanding first-half lead before goals from Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel forced extra-time. Germany struck the crossbar twice in the final stages, but England held on.
Nwaneri featured in all six of England’s matches during the tournament, starting twice. His most significant involvements came in the group stage defeat to Germany and the goalless draw with Slovenia, where he played over an hour in each.
The win marks back-to-back U21 European Championship titles for England and caps a breakthrough season for Nwaneri, who made 37 senior appearances for Arsenal.
