Erik ten Hag’s decision to sign Wout Weghorst for Manchester United was reportedly the subject of mocking at Burnley.

INEOS are finally showing they mean business, as within days of Ten Hag’s sacking, they have all but secured the services of his permanent replacement, Ruben Amorim.

However, had they displayed the same level of decisiveness during the summer, United would have avoided spending big transfer fees on new players for Ten Hag.

Now it remains to be seen how the five new signings would fit into Amorim’s plans, especially since most of the Dutchman’s previous additions have underwhelmed during their time at Old Trafford so far.

Weghorst was one of the 21 stars Ten Hag added to his ranks as United manager, and the Netherlands international was a disappointing arrival, to say the least.

The 32-year-old was signed on a six-month loan deal, believed to be worth more than £2 million, from Burnley following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit.

At the time, the Dutch striker was at Besiktas, as such United’s move for him surprised many, and even led to intriguing reactions from his Burnley teammates.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Burnley players “laughed upon learning” United had signed Weghorst, who was unpopular at the club.

The 6ft 6in journeyman struggled to impress at Burnley, and the players at Turf Moor were “concerned by Weghorst’s dire win percentage in aerial duels.”

He never looked like a United striker, and ended his spell in Manchester with zero Premier League goals to his name.

Ten Hag handed him 31 appearances across all competitions and “subjectively felt he was a success.”

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming another surprise striker landed on United’s radar during Ten Hag’s reign. The Mancunian giants reportedly discussed the idea of signing their former star Danny Welbeck to potentially replace the outgoing Anthony Martial.
