12 months ago Willem II fans were celebrating a return to the Eredivisie under Peter Maes. The side had finished top of the Dutch second tier, leading the league in goals scored with an impressive 77 in 38 games. Fans are now preparing for an immediate return to the Eerste Divisie after a surprise defeat in the promotion play-off final against Telstar. The side capitulated in the second half of the Eredivise season, winning just one of their final 18 league matches. Maes during that barren run, and now the side need to find someone capable of mounting a promotion challenge next season.
The 22-year-old Meerveld was a key factor int he sides promotion last season. He grabbed nine goals and six assists in 37 games and has built upon that this season. In 39 games across all competitions Meerveld contributed six goals and four assists. The former FC Den Bosch man is out of contract next season and may well look for a summer move to remain in the Eredivisie for the 2025/2026 season.
In theory, Meerveld should be considered the winner of both categories. not many other players impressed for Willem II, although Cisse Sandra did not have a decent campaign despite injuries. The 21-year-ood, on loan from Club Brugge, grabbed four goals and two assists in 26 games. Sadly for Sandra, the youngster suffered a second successive relegation, having been on loan at Excelsior who were also demoted to the Dutch second tier last season.
A head coach and players that can score goals and create chances. The side were terrible in front of goal last year, the joint second worst attack with just 34 goals in 34 games. Jesse Bosch led Willem II with just six goals, while Nick Dooderman led in terms of assists with just three. Both FC Volendam and Excelsior were able to bounce straight back, so the blueprint for an immediate return is available.
