Chelsea beat Legia Warsaw 3-0 last night with a second half triple. It was their first away win in 10 games.

The Blues weren’t great, but got the job done. Speaking at full time, Enzo Maresca was positive about the win, although hardly gushing:

“I think second half we were a little bit better. First half we struggled a little bit. Overall I think it was a good, professional performance, second half we were a little more quick in transition. We are happy,” the head coach said.

He was also asked about how pleased he was to add another clean sheet to the collection:

“I think in the last 7, 8 games we’ve had many clean sheets and this is the way to win games. Because in the end if you don’t concede you have more chances to win the game.”

Wow, talk about stating the obvious.

Maresca knows Chelsea must go up a gear on the ball

It’s certainly true that we’ve seen some improvements defensively overall, but let’s face it, these clean sheets have been coming against pretty limited teams. Besides, what’s sending some fans ballistic isn’t the defensive side of things, it’s the fact that Chelsea are trotting out and playing 45 minutes of absolutely dire, low tempo football with no real intent or clear pattern of play.

Even though Maresca plays it down hugely, he admits to it here by saying we “struggled a little bit.”

It’s not just us, or the fans online and in the stadium – the pundits watching the game agreed universally too, as did some of the players.

At the moment we’re losing to big teams and scraping by the smaller teams without really looking dominant.

That’s keeping us in the race for both the Conference League and the top 5 in the Premier League – but it’s not going to win us those races.
