Enzo Maresca has called on Chelsea fans to accept his style and get behind the team after booing during their 1-0 over Leicester City.
Marc Cucurella’s second half strike was enough for the Blues to get past 19th placed Leicester, who slump to their 12th defeat in 13 league matches. Cole Palmer also missed a first half penalty, but Maresca’s side did enough to get the win.
When asked about the fan’s frustrations and boos, Maresca was firm in his response, saying it is impossible to win games like on video games calling on supporters to get behind his style of play and the team:
“This guy [points to a Leicester journalist] was with me last season at Leicester, it happened exactly the same,” Maresca said. “The people have to understand this is our way, our style and this is the way we are going to play. When a team creates the amount of chances we created today, you have to be happy. It’s not easy.
“Leicester, until minute 83, they were 0-0 against Arsenal; the same thing happened against City. If you think football is just a PlayStation and you win easy, no way – every game is difficult. The way the players have done today is fantastic.
“We need our fans. On my Instagram, I said two days ago, our Champions League target will be with our fans supporting us and especially when you play at home. We need them behind the players with the spirit they showed today.
“I completely understand when there is some negative feeling but today, how many chances did we create first-half? The second-half, exactly the same. The players were giving everything. It’s normal because they don’t see behind [the scenes].
“On the way back from Copenhagen, 2 o’clock in the morning, the staff we were watching Leicester games with a line of four. We prepared the session with a line of four and then suddenly they have a line of five. So the players need to change that. I can understand that from the outside you struggle to see that. It’s difficult. They change the plan and the players did fantastic.
“But for sure, as I said already, with our fans behind us, we feel so good.”
