Starmer tells Lionesses they inspired his daughter

England enjoyed their Euro 2025 send-off as they beat Jamaica 7-0 at Leicester’s King Power Stadium, just six days before the opening game of their tournament defence against France in Switzerland.

Two goals from Ella Toone and a Lucy Bronze header put England three goals up before half-time, with Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones and Beth Mead scoring after the break to complete the rout.

England boss Sarina Wiegman was also able to bring Lauren James off the bench for her first minutes since April, with the Chelsea forward completing the final half hour of the friendly after returning from a hamstring injury and setting up Russo’s fifth.

Opponents Jamaica were missing a number of key players, including captain and record scorer Khadija Shaw, and the visitors had an equaliser ruled out for a subjective offside decision when England only led 1-0.

France will be a completely different test on Saturday 5 July in Zurich but the Lionesses ensured they warmed up for the Euros with a confident display.

Sarina Wiegman delighted with England performance ahead of Euros opener

Sarina Wiegman was impressed with England’s performance but knows there will be stronger challenges ahead after their dominant 7-0 win over Jamaica in their final game before the European Women’s Championship.

“We played a good game,” Wiegman said. “We were a lot in the final third, we scored seven goals which is really good, created a lot of chances and some moments could have been even more patient sometimes.

“But at the same time, scoring seven goals and more opportunities to score was really good.

“We know next week we have to take our game to the next level. But what we wanted to do was play a good game, entertain fans, getting ready for next week and getting everyone fit out of this game.

“It shows we have a good team and have many options and competition going on for positions. Today we had six different players score goals, which is nice going into the Euros and it shows the players can score goals.”

England ‘put on a show’ and send message to rivals in Euro 2025 send-off

There were fireworks over Leicester. The Lionesses will hope they seen more over Basel in four weeks’ time. The tests will only get tougher, starting against France in their Euro 2025 opener on Saturday, but England ensured they enjoyed their send-off with a thumping win over Jamaica at the King Power.

It can sometimes be hard to tell just how much to take from a friendly of this nature, and what was clear from this 7-0 win was that a depleted Jamaica provided a demonstration to anyone at Euro 2025 of how to not play against England. The European champions and holders, though, displayed just how much quality they possess when they are allowed time and given options. “We should take a lot of confidence [from the result],” Leah Williamson said. “We wanted to move the ball, put on a show.”

Wiegman: "There’s huge potnetial in this squad"

Sarina Wegmann is last up to speak to ITV, and she tells them that she though “it was a good performance.

“We wanted to show what we could do in the final third. We could be a little more composed, make an extra pass, but I’m really happy with the performance,” she says.

“I think we saw what we wanted to see. I think the team is really strong but you can also make tactical choices.

“I think we have many players who can play in the 10. Right-back and left-back we can figure out also, on the elft we’ve changed it a couple of times. It depends, what do we need? We have options there.

“I am excited about the team, we’ve had two weeks of training and it was really good. We can feel the fight, we want to go the Euros and go out there and play. Let’s get ready for France,” she says as she finishes.

Stanway reacts

Georgia Stanway is next to speak to ITV.

“It was nice, i had a few chances and I tried to make one of them count. It was a nice game, as a whole the performance was very good,” she says.

“I didn’t expect to be having suergery in the end of January. Maybe it happened for a reason, I’m feeling good and feesh, it’s a cliché but I do feel fitter and faster than I have in a long time.

“The main things was to try and enjoy it, we worked hard in training and it was about getting those actions into the game.

“As the games get harder it’s about making sure that if we get a shot, it ends up in a goal.

“This is a new England side, and we’re hungry for it,” she adds.

Ella Toone reacts

Ella Toone is first to speak to ITV at full-time, and she says that England “enjoyed that game today”.

“A lot of goals and a clean sheet, and it’s nice to send ourselves off in that way,” she says.

“It’s been a long time coming, I’ve waited a while [for a goal]. Overall, the performance was great and we’re excited now.”

Asked on her place in the starting eleven, she says: “There’s competition all over the squad, that’s what makes it so exciting. No matter what role I have, I’ll make sure I give my best.

I enjoyed it but there’s others who can play that role and do a great job. We’ve got a very exciting group, and we’re going to take each game as it comes. Hopefully we can make the nation proud.”
