Joey Barton has been slammed by England fans on social media for his constant critical comments about women’s football during Euro 2025.

The former men’s footballer who played for the likes of Manchester City, Newcastle United and Rangers, has been famously vocal about the women’s game.

He has been involved in a long-running spat with former Lioness Eni Aluko, with the High Court recently ruling in favour of her libel claim against the former midfielder. Barton could yet appeal the verdict.

Football broadcaster Jeff Stelling fired back at Barton during Euro 2025 following England’s penalty shootout win over Sweden.

Barton described the shootout where nine of the 14 penalties were missed as a ‘monstrosity’.

Stelling replied: “Bet you haven’t turned off though Joey?” To which Barton responded: “I did Jeff. That’s how bad it was. You can’t tell me that’s proper football. It’s pure cosplay nonsense. And you know it.”

Barton’s negative comments about the Euros have rightly been ridiculed on social media.

What England fans have said to Joey Barton about his negative comments on women’s football?

In his most recent tirade against women’s football, Joey Barton put a poll up on his X account asking “are you a bad person for thinking women’s football is s****”.

@Darrenhurd1966 wrote: “Mr Barton, the women’s games are exciting and full of passion. Be proud of the @Lionesses, don’t knock a lot of them have achieved more than the men.”

@OmarAbdalla5 commented: “Yes mate. Just because it’s not the quality of the men’s game yet doesn’t mean it deserves the ridicule.

“We should all support it then who knows where it could end up. If you have daughters who want to play football knowing they can possibly achieve that dream.”

@RickJapper ripped into men’s football writing: “It’s (women’s football) quite a high standard now. Better than the fadge overpaid men rolling around screaming holding their face when contact was in the shin.”

Another Twitter used described Barton as a “p****” stating: “You’re a bit of a prick for constantly going on about it like. I don’t like golf and as such never watch it or comment on it.”

Despite his negative comments, Barton has even livestreamed himself watching games during Euro 2025 – including England’s victory over Sweden.

In response to a post promoting his livestream, one fan wrote: “Cry some more Joey. They’ve reached more finals in the last four years than the men have since 1930.”

While another X user wrote: “Stop crying and being so worried about the quality of the game and be a fan of the Lionesses. You clearly love it as you watch every game.

England set for third consecutive major tournament final

Despite the negative comments from Joey Barton about women’s football, the England team continues to enjoy tremendous success.

Should England beat Spain, the women’s team will be the first English senior national side to defend a major trophy – something that has not been achieved by the male side.

It is their third consecutive final, after they also reached the 2023 World Cup final against Spain.

The Women’s game is improving in stature and popularity across the world, with England’s semi-final with Italy attracting a peak crowd of more than 10 million.

There have even been calls for a bank holiday should England win Euro 2025 on Sunday against Spain. SheKicks has launched their own petition to call for a bank holiday on Monday, July 28th, should the Lionesses emerge victorious.

England will play an excellent Spain team in the final which consists some of the best players in the world including Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, Esther Gonzalez and Mariona Caldentey.

The UK’s best football betting sites have England as 2/1 underdogs to win the final.
