Crystal Palace’s Caleb Kporha passed in behind for Ethan Wheatley, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Joeri Heerkens.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 22nd minute as AZ Alkmaar youngster Kees Smit curled the ball into the net from the edge of the area, after a well-worked corner.

They doubled their lead after the half-hour mark through Feyenoord striker Zepiqueno Redmond, who put the ball home after a brilliant team move.

In the 42nd minute, Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink made it 3-0 to compound England’s woes.

England started the second half better and were rewarded for their hard work when Wheatley scored in the 52nd minute.

The Manchester United striker’s goal gave England momentum, but they could not reduce the deficit further as the Netherlands extended their lead in the 69th minute.

They made a quick break through the midfield, and Redmond finished off the move.

Palace youngster Jesse Derry scored England’s second goal in the 93rd minute. He took a shot that deflected past Heerkens.

England could have qualified for the next round, but Germany scored in stoppage time to beat Norway 2-1, sealing their place in the semi-final.
