Thomas Tuchel explained why he had left Tino Livramento out of his England squad this month, insisting that the Newcastle United star would get far more benefit from being on of the leaders of the England Under 21s as they look to retain their Euros title.

Back in 2023, Lee Carsley led the young England stars to win the Under 21s Euros.

Anthony Gordon was the star performer, winning the player of the tournament award.

He and other players came out of that 2023 England Under 21 success in great shape, Gordon winning the Newcastle United player of the season award the following 2023/24 season.

The England Under 21s group fixtures at this summer’s Euro finals kick off on Thursday:

12 June 2025 – England v Czech Republic

15 June 2025 – England v Slovenia

18 June 2025 – England v Germany

Lee Carsley is now back in charge of the Under 21s and the England boss has given Tino Livramento rave reviews.

After having been involved in the training camp preparation after the Premier League season ended, it looks like Tino Livramento could be set to continue in the left-back role where he was outstanding in the final months of Newcastle’s season.

Lee Carsley asked if he has been surprised how well Tino Livramento performed there when switched to the left:

“No, definitely not.

“Tino is a top player. An excellent player.

“Tino’s had some injuries in the past which held him back, without those injuries I think he would have been a lot further ahead now than where he is, in terms of pushing for a senior position [with Thomas Tuchel’s side].

“Tino is highly rated, both on and off the pitch.

“The fact that he can play two, three positions is a huge bonus.

“I remember the first camp I ever had with Tino was an Under-20s one….I might have played him on the right wing.
