The French forward is set to become Liverpool’s fourth major signing of the summer, following deals for Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz.

He is expected to arrive on Merseyside on Monday, ahead of undergoing a medical and completing the formalities of the transfer. A six-year contract has been agreed. Ekitike will then join up with the Liverpool squad for their pre-season tour of Asia.

Liverpool will pay an initial fee of £69m for the 23-year-old, which could rise to £79m with add-ons. Newcastle United saw an offer of £70m for Ekitike rejected before Liverpool made their move.

Ekitike emerged as Liverpool’s top target to strengthen at centre-forward after a brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga. He scored 22 goals across all competitions and added 12 assists, as Frankfurt sealed Champions League qualification.

The deal will see Liverpool’s summer spending move to around £238m in initial fees, but the Reds are expected to make further additions before September’s deadline.

A centre-back is next on the agenda for Arne Slot, following the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the transfer window.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and Ajax teenager Jorell Hato are options on the shortlist. Another wide player could also be sought, should Luis Diaz leave Anfield.

The Colombian has expressed interest in an exit amid an approach from Bayern Munich.
