The Wildcats announced the news via a post on their official club website this morning.
The 31-year-old American keeper has enjoyed a successful playing career which has seen her play her football in America, Iceland, France and England. Saunders has spent the final four-and-a-half years of her career playing in the Barclays Women’s Championship in spells with Lewes and Durham. The keeper has clocked up 61 appearances in the English second tier. Saunders has been a regular in the Durham side in the last two seasons.
After her Durham exit and professional retirement was announced, Saunders said “I can’t thank the club and fans enough. You welcomed me with open arms and made the North East feel like home. I’m forever grateful for all the love and support I’ve received over the last two and a half years. I’m sad to be leaving the North East but will be back soon and will support the club in any way that I can. Thank you and – up the Duzza!”
New signing Rylee Foster will pick up Durham’s number one jersey off the back of Saunders’ retirement.
