Matty Godden joined Charlton Athletic from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee in the summer.
Charlton Athletic signed striker Matty Godden from Coventry City in the summer after Alfie May had left for Birmingham City.
May scored 23 goals in League One for the Addicks during the 2023/24 campaign before joining the Blues in the summer, and there were some doubts over whether Godden would be an adequate replacement for the 31-year-old in SE7.
However, Godden has shown that he can be just as clinical as May during his time at The Valley so far, while his strength, link-up play and aerial ability have enabled him to be more impactful in general play than the man he replaced.
The fact that Godden has been able to find the net on a consistent basis for Charlton will not come as a huge surprise to Coventry supporters, as they saw him rack up 50 goals during his time with the Sky Blues.
Godden has made 26 appearances in League One for Charlton so far this season, although only 15 of them have been from the start, so his tally of 10 league goals is a very respectable return.
The 33-year-old has also netted twice in the FA Cup and once in the Vertu Trophy, meaning that he has 13 goals in all competitions as things stand midway through February.
He has been in excellent form in recent weeks, having scored in each of the Addicks' last four games in League One, helping Nathan Jones' side climb back into the top-six and restore hopes of reaching the play-offs this season.
The striker has displayed his instinctive finishing ability for Charlton on a number of occasions already, while he has also shown that he can score other kinds of goals, having scored a couple of penalties, a header against Bolton Wanderers, and an impressive long-range effort away at Rotherham United.
Godden only needs to score five more league goals to register his highest-scoring season at League One level, having previously netted 14 in the third tier for both Coventry and Peterborough United.
Charlton boss Jones was full of praise for Godden following the Addicks' 2-0 win against Stevenage at The Valley last weekend, as per London News Online.
"Matty Godden is a top, top frontman," said the Welshman.
"We talk about Alfie May and Alfie was brilliant for us - but Matty Godden has got some pedigree and I felt, at times, that it was disrespectful to him.
"Matty Godden has scored everywhere he has been, he's got promoted and played in the Championship constantly.
"The guy is a class act and today it is as good a centre-forward link man and performance as you've seen here for a while."
While Godden is enjoying his football at the moment, he also seems to be thriving on the golf course.
As per @jmgodwingolf on Instagram, the Charlton striker is working hard to take his handicap from scratch to +3 by the end of the summer.
Godden's golf swing certainly looked to be in good shape as he was celebrating scoring a penalty during the Addicks' 2-1 win against Peterborough on Tuesday night.
He will no doubt he hoping that he can enjoy success in both of his sports this summer, with Charlton eyeing a play-off place.
