Sunderland‘s capture of striker Brian Brobbey from Ajax could have a knock-on effect which means Celtic miss out on Kasper Dolberg.
Celtic have been trying to sign Dolberg from Anderlecht and he is their top striker target on deadline day.
However, there is no agreement on a fee as Celtic are prepared to pay £8m, but Anderlecht are demanding £10m to play ball.
Now Celtic could be set to pay for not getting the deal done quickly as, according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Ajax want Dolberg to replace Brobbey.
He is a leading candidate to fill Brobbey’s shoes, with the Ajax man set to complete a move to Sunderland before the window closes.
Sunderland came in quickly for Brobbey and agreed a fee with Ajax for the striker, who is ready to answer the call at the Stadium of Light; Fulham wanted Brobbey on loan, but that did not work for Ajax.
That has set Ajax off looking for a new striker and Dolberg is a leading candidate for that role.
Dolberg was on the books at Ajax between 2016 and 2019, and is a player that the Dutch giants know well.
Anderlecht are open to selling and Ajax are exploring a swoop, with the Dutch window not set to close until midnight on Tuesday.
That could leave Celtic missing out on Dolberg and looking elsewhere for a striker; it would also surely lead to further criticism of the club’s transfer policy and the time it can take for them to do deals as they haggle.
Adam Idah’s exit has been blocked until such time as Celtic can bring in a replacement.
The Bhoys continue to work on other deals though and have seriously entered the race to sign winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from Premier League side Crystal Palace.
