CONI President Giovanni Malagò has said that he was ‘surprised’ to learn that Juventus and Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero could run for the FIGC Presidency, but admitted that he does not know if there is any substance behind the rumours.
Reports on Sunday revealed that Del Piero could throw his name into the hat for the next FIGC elections, which are due to take place in February 2025. Cronache di Spogliatoio claim that Del Piero could confirm his candidacy later on this week.
The role of FIGC President is currently held by Gabriele Gravina, who has been in office since October 2018.
Speaking outside an event at the Salone d’Onore in Rome on Monday, Malagò shared his thoughts after learning of the FIGC Presidency rumours.
“I’ve read them, it surprised me,” he told the press, reported via Calciomercato.com.
Malagò continued: “I don’t have the faintest idea if there is any element of probable truth, but it would be powerful news. An element of certainty is required, though, I won’t add anything else.”
Del Piero has been busy in a number of different roles since he hung up his boots in 2014.
He has largely been based in the United States, where he owns a restaurant and the LA 10 FC football team. He has also regularly appeared as a pundit on CBS’s coverage of the Champions League over the last 18 months.
