An Eintracht side featuring several youngsters were beaten 1-0 by SG Sonnenhof Großaspach on Wednesday.
With 13 players currently away on international duty, Eintracht Frankfurt took on fifth-tier SG Sonnenhof Großaspach on Wednesday evening with a makeshift squad featuring players from the U21 and U19 sides. Junior Dina Ebimbe was a late absentee because of a stomach bug.
Großaspach were the better side in the early stages and took the lead through Volkan Celiktas’ effort in the 17thminute – which proved to be the game’s only goal. Eintracht gradually grew into the contest but failed to fashion any clear-cut goalscoring opportunities before the interval.
Nkounkou denied by woodwork
The Eagles were unfortunate not to equalise eight minutes into the second half, when Niels Nkounkou rattled the crossbar from 20 metres. Mo Dahoud sent a long-range effort straight into the arms of Großaspach goalkeeper Maximilian Reule (55’) and Eintracht applied heavy pressure in search of a leveller, but it stayed 1-0.
Dino Toppmöller’s side return to action against VfB Stuttgart on Bundesliga Matchday 27. The game on Saturday 29 March kicks off at 18:30 CET and is being broadcast live on EintrachtFM and Sky.
Sporting director Timmo Hardung: “We had a couple of players who played the game to maintain their rhythm. We also had a lot of young players, which is interesting for us as a club – even if that team had never played together before.”
