Arsenal’s hero against Manchester United, David Raya, shared his delight with the victory after the game while also acknowledging the sub-par display from the Gunners.
Arsenal began their Premier League campaign on Sunday, 17 August, with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Old Trafford. A first-half header from Riccardo Calafiori sealed the three points, with Arsenal once again showcasing their set-piece strength. Raya was pivotal, producing a string of crucial saves and earning the Player of the Match award for his outstanding display.
While supporters were pleased with the result, many felt the performance left plenty to be desired. Raya himself admitted the team must improve.
“It’s a great start in terms of points,” Raya told Arsenal media after the match. “In terms of a difficult place to come, away from home to Old Trafford and get the three points and a clean sheet. But we know it wasn’t good enough with the ball and we made a lot of mistakes, so there’s a lot of things to improve, but I’m happy to get the three points and start with a clean sheet.”
The Spaniard added: “We know coming to this place how important it is to be alert and try to do my job and help the team and I think I did that and tried to help the team as much as possible. We got the three points and the clean sheet, that was the main thing.
“That’s the willingness, the fight, the spirit that we have altogether, where things are not going our way and we make mistakes, everybody’s sprinting back and trying to help the teammate that’s made a mistake to recover the ball and to do the right thing. So we did that and I think we dug deep very, very well, especially the last 10-15 minutes where they threw everything at us and we defended very well, so that’s credit to the team.”

Despite the unconvincing display, Mikel Arteta will be pleased that his side secured all three points in difficult circumstances. With several summer signings still bedding in, a slow start was perhaps inevitable, and Old Trafford remains one of the toughest grounds to visit. Dropping points would have put Arsenal behind early, with both Manchester City and Liverpool already registering opening wins.
Next up for the Gunners is their first home match of the season against Leeds United, a fixture that looks far more favourable on paper and one supporters will expect them to win.
What do you think Gooners, was David Raya the standout reason Arsenal came away with the points?
