De Gea played an incredible 545 times for United with very few people having played more for the club in its history.

He left as a free agent in 2023 and has since joined Fiorentina in Italy.

The Serie A side visited Old Trafford for the Snapdragon Cup and lost on penalties as United’s Kobbie Mainoo fired in the winning effort.

It was an emotional homecoming for De Gea though, who exited the game as a substitute just before the end and lapped up applause from his former home fans.

Speaking on the experience to the club’s official website he stated, “it’s my house so it was a bit emotional, of course. It was two years without coming here so it was unforgettable, for sure.”

The Spaniard then expressed his desire for United to return to winning ways and climb up the table. He explained, “I wish them [United] all the best, as always with a club like this, with the fans. They deserve the best. It’s been a period of struggles for a couple of years but what this club means for me, and everyone who loves this club, is just unbelievable. I wish them all the best, as always.”

Personal joy versus Arsenal

The Fiorentina keeper then recalled his own incredible performance versus Arsenal in December 2017 when he made 14 saves at the Emirates in a 3-1 victory for United.

Commenting on the match he stated, “it was one of my best games, probably, in the shirt. But every game I played for this club has been sensational for me.”

Pushing for three points

De Gea was then asked about United’s opening Premier League fixture against the Gunners and he claimed that winning was all that was important.

He elaborated, “the first game is always special, in terms of playing at Old Trafford. Hopefully, United can beat Arsenal and start with three points.”

United take on the Gunners at Old Trafford later on today at 16.30 BST.
