If there was one person we didn’t really expect to ‘agree’ with Ibrox Noise on Philippe Clement, it’s ex-chairman Dave King.
The outspoken former chief of all things Rangers has never been shy of venting his (often controversial) views in the press, and rarely do we tend to agree with what he said.
But today’s astonishing comment effectively slaughtering Nils Koppen and Clement for failing to recruit and prepare the team well was very unexpected:
“Individual players cannot be held accountable if the combined result of recruitment and team preparation results in poor performance.”
In a nutshell, that the scouting team has fallen short and Clement has done likewise.
King is vividly defending captain James Tavernier over the abuse he received outside Ibrox, which is his right to do, but the fact he’s spinning the blame onto Clement and Koppen is eye-opening.
Some are claiming it’s more of a general criticism, of recruitment and preparation over the years, but the words are pretty clear.
It doesn’t matter what time frame it means, it’s clearly including present day.
And King is strongly suggesting Clement isn’t preparing the team well and that Koppen’s recruitment has been poor.
It’s pretty damning that a well-respected ex-Rangers chief (whether we agree with that respect or not) has chosen these words, and has willingly attacked past and present recruitment and management, or just present day.
It doesn’t really matter – King’s words do carry weight in Rangers circles, for better or worse, and he’s made a very big decision to get involved in this one.
Do those 75% of Rangers fans who back Clement agree with King on this one?
