Luke Littler took to social media to slam Sheffield United following their play-off final defeat
Darts sensation Luke Littler has slammed Sheffield United following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland on Saturday, stemming from crowd reaction he received in the city's Utilita Arena on Thursday night.
The Blades took the lead at Wembley through Tyrese Campbell but were pegged back by goals from Eliezer Mayenda and Tom Watson.
Chris Wilder’s side finished 14 points ahead of Sunderland in the Championship but were bested by the Black Cats when it mattered most.
Defeat means Sheffield United are resigned to another season in the second-tier and are the only relegated side from the 2023/24 campaign not to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Littler was booed by sections of the crowd during the Premier League Darts at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, and has now hit back at the Blades.
Posting to his Instagram story following the game, Man United fan Littler poked fun at Sheffield United after fans booed him at the city's Premier League Darts night, although it's likely that not all the people that gave him a negative reaction were Blades fans.
“Heard some boos on Thursday night, karma always comes back to bite you 🙈,” stated the current PDC world champion.
Littler ran out victorious in Sheffield, which was his record-extending sixth nightly victory of the season.
The 18-year-old defeated Luke Humphries in the final 6-3 to state his dominance over the rest of the line-up ahead of Thursday at the O2 Arena in London, where he will compete in his own play-off series to try and retain his Premier League Darts crown.
The final few months of the 2024/25 campaign have been excruciating for Sheffield United supporters, seeing their title charge falter just as the season reached its most crucial chapter.
Wilder’s side controlled the first 70 minutes of the final perfectly, but Lady Luck just wasn’t on their side in the end.
Luck isn’t something the Blades have enjoyed much of in the play-offs – in fact, it would be fair to say they’ve suffered quite the opposite over the years.
Having now failed to win in any of their last ten attempts to get promoted via the play-offs, the Steel City side have the worst record of any club at getting promoted by this method.
Littler’s comments are sure to add salt to the wounds of the Sheffield United supporters, who will still be coming to terms with their side’s defeat.
Victory at the home of English football can be sweet, but defeat can be equally cruel, something Wilder and Co. will be feeling to the extreme right now. The club will also feel the financial burden of another season in the Championship, something they would've hoped to avoid.
All they can do now is reset and focus on next season with the determination to right their Wembley heartbreak.
However, that will be of little solace to the Blades’ faithful right now.
