West Ham 0-3 Chelsea
Just when Graham Potter thought Chelsea could not hurt him any longer, his former club could really kick him while he is down on Friday night. I have said for a while that the London Stadium is a hard ground for West Ham’s own players to perform in when fans are not happy, even in a London derby. I am not sure they have the personalities or leaders in the squad to cope with that. That is why I originally thought Potter was a great choice to be the Hammers manager. I felt he had the character to get the best out of a dressing room, but the truth is he was burnt at Stamford Bridge and is yet to recover. They say when someone is feeling the pressure, they start to make mistakes. The Irons’ line-up at Sunderland was bizarre.
Man City 2-1 Spurs
Because he scored twice at home to a newly promoted side, Jamie O’Hara has predicted Richarlison will now score more league goals than Gyökeres this campaign. The Brazilian managed just four last season. Combined with the amount of praise Man United received for losing at Old Trafford, this might be the biggest overreaction I have ever seen to an opening weekend. That highlights how desperate some on the internet are for views. This will obviously give us more of an insight into what Thomas Frank has changed over the summer. Spurs have shocked City before. Remember, despite finishing 17th, they won 4-0 on their last visit to the Etihad. Because of that, I do not think Pep Guardiola will take anything for granted. Keep an eye on Reijnders, easily the best player in Match Day 1 of the Premier League.
Cherries 2-1 Wolves
Iraola did not need to do anything else to prove he is a top manager, yet I assumed his team would go through the motions at Anfield considering four of last season’s back five, including the keeper, have left the south coast. Yet he sent his men to the champions believing they could get a result. The only small criticism is at 2-2, could they have been braver and carried on attacking instead of trying to protect a draw with a makeshift defence? Expect the Cherries to bring in defenders in the next couple of weeks, but their attack will keep them away from relegation.
It is sad that it took less than 30 minutes of a new season for the UK to again show it has a serious issue with grown adults thinking, in the confines of their football bubble, they can act how they want. Semenyo so nearly had the final laugh. He has been linked with Arsenal this week. Bournemouth have proven they will sell if the price is right, but they will be asking for the same or more than Eze cost. Maybe the Gunners should have enquired before he extended his contract?
Brentford 1-2 Aston Villa
Brentford have been one of the best-run clubs in the division for years, so it feels harsh to question them. Yet they are playing with fire. They surely have to reinvest some of the money they have made before September, but need to do better than Dango Ouattara for over £40 million. I would be interested if you asked Bees supporters how many truly believe their current squad can avoid relegation? Worse still, how many in the dressing room believe that? Sometimes a team reach a point where they just need one moment or result to lift the entire club. That would help Keith Andrews, yet you fear for the home side if they concede early.
Burnley 0-3 Sunderland
Now I am in danger of reading too much into the opening day of the season. Scott Parker would, or should, have spoken of Spurs as a free hit and therefore will expect defending more like last season on Saturday. Remember, the Clarets finished 24 points ahead of the Black Cats in the Championship. Yet I believe mentality is so important in sport and momentum can change quickly. If the visitors were to get an early goal, suddenly it becomes a golden opportunity to have six points on the board already. When you consider how few points promoted sides have managed over the years, starting well can be the difference between survival or not.
Arsenal 2-0 Leeds
The arrogance of some Gooners who continue to think we are better than we are. We have not lifted the title in 22 years. Liverpool could afford last season to be in second gear for months and still became champions by 10 points. Yet for some reason a section of our base looked down on winning at Old Trafford 1-0. Imagine their reaction if we only beat a newly promoted team 2-0 at the Emirates.
Leeds have intentionally brought in a lot of players this summer who are over six feet tall. It is designed so they never get bullied, but outside of a physical battle that Saliba and Gabriel will relish, they will lack the quality to do much more. You sense a few Gunners could benefit from a decent afternoon.

Fulham 1-2 Man United
Roy Keane appeared baffled by all the praise Man United’s players and fans were giving themselves on Sunday for losing. Of all the pundits I would listen to about events at Old Trafford, I pay attention to someone who led the club to one of their most successful periods and lifted every major domestic honour. As a proven winner, the 54-year-old simply has standards.
As much as he noticed Muembo and Cunha immediately made the team look better, there are zero positives in being defeated at home. If everyone is that upbeat when they lose, imagine the scenes if they actually won at the Cottage. Pitch invasion?
Crystal Palace 1-1 Notts Forest
It feels strange in 2025 to say well done to a professional player for turning out for an employer who is paying them thousands of pounds a week. Yet when you consider the stance the likes of Isak and Wiska have taken this summer, it shows what kind of pros Eze and Guehi are. Clearly both are expecting to leave Selhurst Park in the next couple of weeks, yet it has not impacted their performances at Wembley or Stamford Bridge.
They play their first ever European tie on Thursday, and you can understand why Steve Parish might want to ensure qualification for the UEFA Conference League before doing business. The irony is that at one point Forest would have been playing in midweek instead of the Eagles before the two were forced to swap competitions. Both small squads will long term struggle balancing European and domestic schedules.
Everton 0-0 Brighton
Everton’s big day at their new home. Gooners know from experience it takes time to adjust to new surroundings. Like Arsenal will always miss Highbury, you never replace playing at Goodison with fans close to the pitch. It is just something the Toffees had to do for financial reasons.
The big day is made for Jack Grealish and the 29-year-old needs that kind of moment to reignite his career. Although I am not sure David Moyes suits a Jack Grealish. The romantic in me says he can be the main man like he was at Aston Villa, but there is a reason Pep Guardiola has loaned him out. In the last two FA Cup Finals, Man City needed a goal, yet a world class manager did not trust a talent who cost £100 million to come off the bench, even for a second. There is a reason.
Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool
Anyone else think both clubs are waiting to get this fixture out of the way before discussing Isak’s future? Credit to Arne Slot, as much as Jamie Carragher tried to question him, the Liverpool manager is clearly intent on making the champions an attacking outlet this season. The problem for the rest of the division is the Reds do not even have to play well but can still score twice with ease, such are their offensive options. It sounds like Kevin Keegan’s Toon Army in the 90s.
At the final whistle last Friday, Mo Salah stood alone applauding the Kop as they sang Diogo Jota’s name. The Egyptian could not keep his emotions under control any longer, and tears rolled down his cheeks. It was a reminder that football is a beautiful game, but just that, a game. A shame one coward did not get that and had to racially abuse someone. I would send him to jail and name him publicly. Let employers, friends and family know what kind of person he is.
