Croatian international will provide competition for Tyrick Mitchell as FA Cup holders plan for maiden foray into Europe
Crystal Palace have announced the £3million signing of left wing-back Borna Sosa from Ajax on a three-year deal.
The 27-year-old, capped 26 times at international level by Croatia, will provide competition for academy graduate Tyrick Mitchell at Selhurst Park next season.
Sosa endured a difficult two-year spell at Ajax, spending last season on loan in Italy at Torino. However, he arrives in England with a strong reputation from his time with German club Stuttgart, where he recorded 35 assists and five goals in 115 appearances.
The Zagreb native started five of Croatia's seven games as they reached the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar in 2022. But he missed last month's latest round of internationals with an ankle sprain.
Sosa becomes FA Cup holders Palace's second signing of the summer so far after the arrival of Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benitez from PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer last month.
He will join up with the rest of the Palace squad next week as preparations for next season get underway.
Palace chairman Steve Parish, who on Thursday came in for criticism from former co-owner John Textor, praised Sosa's experience, adding that he will provide depth with Palace set to play in Europe next season - though in which competition remains subject to a UEFA ruling.
Parish said: “We believe Borna will be a fantastic fit for Crystal Palace. His credentials speak for themselves, and his arrival adds additional quality, experience and depth to our squad. I look forward to welcoming him to South London.”
Sosa said: “I'm very excited to join Crystal Palace. I've heard so many good things about the club. I cannot wait to meet the players, the staff, and all of the fans, because I've heard so many good things. I'm very, very excited to be here.”
