Hugo Ekitike’s early strike and Jeremie Frimpong’s chip looked to have sealed Arne Slot’s second trophy as Liverpool manager, but Crystal Palace fought back through Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty and Ismaïla Sarr’s neat finish.

With the game decided through penalties, Justin Devenny was the hero for Palace when he scored his crucial spot-kick.

In a game between two winners from last season at Wembley Stadium, the place where history is made, there was always going to be drama.

As it happened

At the very start of the game, Crystal Palace supporters behind the goal had snuck in their pyros and there was a sea of red light behind the goal.

However in the fourth minute, the lights went out when Ekitike found the bottom corner.

Daichi Kamada’s inch-perfect pass into Mateta caused problems for the Liverpool defence. Alisson dealt with the initial threat, but Van Dijk failed to do the same when he hacked down Sarr inside the area.

Mateta calmy slotted his effort away from 12 yards to level the score.

As champions do, Liverpool fought back and it was another one of the new boys to show their worth.

Frimpong picked up the ball on the right-hand side and delivered a delicate chip towards the back post, his effort lofted over Dean Henderson into the side netting to regain Liverpool’s advantage.

The Reds started the second period immensely. Ekitike was presented with two chances to get his second goal of the afternoon, but he failed to find the target on both occasions.

On the 60-minute-mark, Alisson denied Eberechi Eze from point-blank range with his leg.

Palace continued to build and probe at the defence of the Premier League champions but struggled to find a way through.

That was until the 77th minute, when Sarr was played through on goal and struck the ball past the onrushing Alisson.

Milos Kerkez then made a timely intervention to block another Sarr attempt on goal moments later.

In the final seconds, substitute Devenny came within inches of securing the victory for Palace, but his effort was dragged narrowly wide.

An intense affair between two champions in their own right, the game was still level at 2-2 when Chris Kavanagh blew the whistle for full-time, meaning the game was to be decided from the penalty spot.

Henderson was pivotal for The Eagles, saving two spot kicks, before Devenny found the top corner to give Palace another piece of silverware and create a new piece of history.
