The shocking departures for NJ/NY Gotham FC have highlighted the offseason before the 2025 campaign begins. From shocking trades like Yazmeen Ryan and Lynn Williams, to losing players like Delanie Sheehan via free agency, the mass exodus was unexpected.

Crystal Dunn is also leaving Gotham FC

However, the departures are continuing to take place. On Tuesday, Gotham FC announced that Crystal Dunn, who was one of the USWNT signings from last year, is leaving the club. She and the team mutually agreed to part ways, giving her the freedom to find her next destination. As a result, she appeared in just 23 games in all competitions.

Dunn's departure was shocking, but also not surprising. The versatile player was not expected to leave, and some thought she just needed time away for personal reasons. She spent the last couple of months away from the pitch, not playing for the NJ/NY side in the final regular season games and the playoffs. Perhaps her lack of playing time, for she did not always start, led to a difficult time, leading her to step away.

The forward is someone who likely expects to start, so maybe Gotham could not guarantee that. In addition, she might not have adjusted to the club, and thought it was not working.

At the same time, Dunn's Instagram post makes one wonder if there is more to the story. In complete honesty, there is a huge chance that is the case. She began the post by saying "I can’t even find the words to express how incredibly sad I am." With that statement, is she sad that it did not work out in New Jersey? Is she sad that she has to leave the Bats? Was the decision influenced by what Dunn wants, the Gotham front office, or both?

Nevertheless, the termination of the NWSL veteran's contract makes it easy to question and wonder whether something is going on at Gotham FC. Did they just have too many stars and some players left to ensure playing time? Or is there something going on at the club that has led to this major exodus?
