Premier League dreams were made and cruelly dashed in a fairytale Championship play-off final at Wembley. There was a real romantic element to the latest edition of the so-called ‘richest game in football’, which only increases in importance every year as the financial luxuries associated with the English top-flight continue to rocket.
Incredibly Saturday’s contest was a League Two fixture just five years ago, with these two teams having both battled back from the brink. But it is Luton who have become the first club ever to go from the top-flight to non-league football and back again, securing their first-ever Premier League promotion via the lottery of penalties after a tense 1-1 draw.
The Hatters bounced back from the worrying early collapse of captain Tom Lockyer to take the lead through Jordan Clark, with Gabriel Osho and Elijah Adebayo also seeing goals ruled out. Joe Taylor thought he had won it in extra time, with Luton finally sealing promotion after Fankaty Dabo’s sole miss in a brilliant shootout. Follow Coventry vs Luton reaction live below!
