Confirmed: Donyell Malen Joins Aston Villa | OneFootball

Premier League side Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund for a fee in the ballpark of 25-million euros plus performance-related add-ons. The Dutchman had made twenty-one appearances for Dortmund in all competitions this season, scoring five in the process.

Donyel Malen arrived in Dortmund in 2021 with high hopes after a breakthrough season with PSV Eindoven, impressing in the Eredivisie, scoring 27 goals in 45 appearances. Yet he never fully met expectations despite being the Black and Yellow’s top scorer last season. The Dutch International has scored 39 goals across 132 appearances for Dortmund. He’ll be remembered for his hot-streaks and near-post goal as well as his inconsistency and lack of pressing.

Donyell Malen is an attacking-minded player with an eye for goal. While he’s found success in two-striker formations, most of hist goals for BVB came from the wing. While he lacks many defensive qualities and struggles to implement a high press, the Dutchman can take the ball in stride and dribble it into the box. He was Dortmund’s top scorer last season for a reason.

The departure shouldn’t come as shock since Malen has been linked with a move away through several transfer windows, especially last summer. Aston Villa needs attacking reinforcements, and Dortmund have managed a deal to make back most of the fee they spent on Malen back in 2021.
