Sunderland were linked with a move for Jordan Henderson earlier this season
Monaco are in talks with Ajax over a move to sign Jordan Henderson this January amid reported interest from Sunderland earlier this season.
According to Sky Sports (08.06), the midfielder is interested in a transfer to the Ligue 1 giants before the market shuts on 3 February.
The midfielder made the switch to the Amsterdam club last January, just a few months after leaving Liverpool for Saudi Arabia.
The 34-year-old has made 17 appearances in the Eredivisie this season, contributing four assists, with the team sitting second in the Dutch top flight table.
It was reported in October by Football Insider that Sunderland were lining up a potential move for Henderson.
It was claimed that contact was made, with Régis Le Bris keen to bring the veteran back to the club where his career began.
However, any opportunity of that happening is now looking a little slimmer with reports suggesting that Monaco are in talks over a deal with Ajax.
It is believed that Ajax are not looking to sell the player, but Henderson is interested in completing the move.
The clubs have until Monday evening to find a resolution to this impasse, but it remains unclear what kind of fee it would take to convince the Dutch giants to cash in.
Henderson has a contract with Ajax until the summer of 2026, meaning they have no immediate need to sell the player.
Sunderland are aiming to fight for automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season, having last competed at that level in 2017.
The Black Cats have already added another midfielder to their ranks this January, bringing Enzo Le Fee in from AS Roma.
Le Bris’ side currently sit fourth in the Championship table, just three points adrift of second place Sheffield United.
Next up for Sunderland is a trip to face rivals Middlesbrough on Monday evening in an 8pm kick-off.
If Ajax are unwilling to sell at the moment, then that means they would want a sizable fee in order to change their minds.
In that case, Sunderland are best off avoiding any potential move to bring Henderson back to the club for the time being.
Perhaps next year, depending on their league status, a pursuit of the midfielder might make more sense.
It would be a move supporters would enjoy seeing come to fruition given Henderson’s connection to the club, but it’s not one the Black Cats should push for at any cost.
