Club América continues undefeated start in Liga MX Femenil | OneFootball

MIAMI – The new year has filled Concacaf W clubs with renewed aspirations for championships and more historic achievements while the road to the 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup Finals intensifies.

Club América, one of the clubs that will vie for the inaugural W Champions Cup trophy, is off to an undefeated start in Mexico. Tigres UANL, another of the semifinalists, also featured its offense on display while NWSL sides NJ/NY Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC prepare for a new season.

América Femenil continue to soar in Mexican Clausura

The Clausura 2025 season in Liga MX Femenil concluded its fifth matchweek, and Club América remained in first place with its latest victory.

Las Águilas earned a 5-nil win against Club León, with goals from Daniela Espinosa (12’, 42’), Karen Luna (29’), Irene Guerrero (45’+2), and Sarah Luebbert (90’+4). The result improved the Mexico City side to a 5-0-0 start. It also marked a fourth consecutive match without conceding a goal for Sandra Paños and the América backline.

CF Pachuca earned a 5-nil victory of its own against Atlético San Luis, to improve to a 4-1-0 start for second place. Ella Sanchez (1’), and Chinwendu Ihezuo (4’) got the scoring started before Charlyn Corral struck a hat-trick (30’, 50’, 76’). The victory marks the second consecutive for the Tuzas and a second consecutive clean sheet for goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras and her defense.

Defending champions CF Monterrey earned a 1-nil victory at CD Guadalajara to improve to 4-0-1 and follow in third place. Ana Lucía Martínez delivered the match-winner in the 90’+3.

FC Juárez won 2-1 at Santos Laguna to improve to fourth place with a 3-2-0 record. Grace Asantewaa (12’) and Miriam Castillo Zarate (75’) struck for Las Bravas, while Kimberli Gomez Castillo (90’+4) cut the deficit for the hosts.

Pumas UNAM won 4-1 at Necaxa to follow in fifth place with a 3-1-1 mark. Atlético San Luis (6th), Queretaro (7th), and CD Guadalajara (8th), round out the teams that occupy the top eight in the hunt for the final phase.

Tigres UANL, ninth with a 2-1-2 record, saw its attack breakthrough in a 5-nil win against Toluca. Ana Dias (7, 54’’), Stephany Mayor (36’), Jennifer Hermoso (40’, 81’) scored in the victory. Las Amazonas will host the W Champions Cup Finals in May and look to add another trophy to their case.

NWSL, USL Super League clubs prepare for season restarts

The top tiers in the United States are seeing their clubs prepare to return to official matches in the coming months.

The USL Super League is scheduled to resume its 2024/25 season on February 8 when the Tampa Bay Sun FC host Fort Lauderdale United FC. Brooklyn FC leads in first place with 29 points before the winter break.

Clubs in the NWSL have begun to report for preseason activities ahead of the 2025 season. San Diego Wave FC recently made headlines for the “World-Record Transfer” of U.S. women’s national team defender Naomi Girma to England’s Chelsea FC.

Girma helped the USWNT to a Concacaf W Championship title in 2022, the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup in 2024, and a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She also helped Wave FC to a 3-0-1 record in the 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup as the team narrowly missed the Finals on goal difference.

San Diego also announced the hiring of head coach Jonas Eidevall, the former Arsenal WFC manager. The Houston Dash hired Fabrice Gautrat to fill its coaching vacancy.
