All the attention this week is on Cole Palmer – and understandably so.
The story in the Daily Mail this evening was that the attacking midfielder is set to be a key part of the England setup going forward. That’s no surprise.
But also set to feature in the squad this week after a good start with Chelsea, and also hoping to upgrade himself from talented squad option to regular starter, is Levi Colwill.
He featured as a left back in the last international break and could reprise that role again, with Luke Shaw still out injured and Ben Chilwell frozen out.
He did a really interesting piece of content for the England website today about his rise from grassroots to Three Lions international:
“I was obsessed with football from a young age – it’s all I ever wanted to do,” the defender explained.
“My dad was massive in getting me into it. He’d take me down to the park and we’d be kicking balls all the time… I started training with players who were older than me but I just really loved it. At home I’d always wake up before my dad and run around downstairs with my boots on. I think everyone was probably sick of me but I loved the game.
“Having come through the ranks, now I just want to keep going with Chelsea and England.”
Levi Colwill makes his competitive England debut.
Colwill was already given plenty of chances by Mauricio Pochettino last season, but injuries ended up disrupting what otherwise would have been an awesome breakout campaign. So far, this season is building nicely on last season, and a positive spell with England is a fitting reward for that progress.
Just please don’t get injured!
