Chelsea have had their fair share of goalscoring defenders over the years, and Marc Cucurella stepped up on a number of occasions last season.
Marc Cucurella scores for Chelsea against Man U.
“I don’t work on finishing! It’s more about understanding the position, being in the right moment, and it’s true that this season I’ve scored a lot of goals,” the full back said in quotes picked up by the club’s official website.
“When you score a few, you get the feeling that every time you’re in the box, you’ll score. It’s really good, and hopefully I can score more in the future.
“I think it’s more about being in the right place at the right time. Some of them are just about getting into the box, not thinking too much, or taking one touch. It’s about understanding the position and the base of the game.”
‘For sure, it’s a very important game as if we win, we go through [to the knockout stage],” Cucurella said of tonight’s opposition.
“We’ve watched ES Tunis’ games and they play good football. They’re a tough team with very good players, and we need to stay focused. We know all the teams in this tournament are some of the best in the world, so for sure it will be a tough game. But we need to do things well and fight for the three points.”
One thing we can be sure of tonight is that Cucurella will be doing his all to get the three points and maybe even popping up with a goal – if we risk playing him. He’s racked up a crazy number of minutes already this season, and has started both games in this tournament already, having just played twice for Spain in the post-season international break.
We’ve said this already, but we think the manager is playing with fire using him so much, and made a huge mistake not bringing a proper left back out to the USA as cover.
