Chelsea have sealed another Barclays Women’s Super League title success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the Leigh Sports Village.

Arsenal’s 5-2 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park earlier this evening meant that Chelsea needed just a point to win the 2024/2025 league title. The South West Londoners collected all three points in the North West with full-back Lucy Bronze heading home the winning goal in the second half.

A competitive first half produced no goals but there were some good chances created. Phallon Tullis-Joyce had to be alert to deny Mayra Ramírez before Melvine Malard saw a shot saved by visiting keeper Hannah Hampton at the other end. Grace Clinton got on the end of the rebound but her effort was cleared off the goal-line by Naomi Girma.

Malard was then gifted an opportunity to score following a Johanna Rytting Kaneryd error but Hampton was able to smother the danger.

It was a goalkeeper who again came out on top early in the second half. Manchester United’s Tullis-Joyce did exceptionally well to deny Aggie Beever-Jones, Rytting Kaneryd and Erin Cuthbert in quick succession.

Elisabeth Terland then went close for the hosts before Bronze broke the deadlock for Chelsea 16 minutes from time after getting on the end of a corner.

The opening goal settled any nerves in the Chelsea camp and they were able to comfortably see the game out and secure an eighth Barclays Women’s Super League title.

Both teams are back in Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday. Manchester United play host to Manchester City while Chelsea travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
