Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly insists the club are “moving in the right direction” despite vocal fan protests before the game against Southampton this week.

Fans marched outside Stamford Bridge to voice their displeasure at Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership group, which Boehly is a part of, along with Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter, and Hansjörg Wyss.

Supporters held up signs which read ‘BlueCo stop killing our club’ and ‘You’re destroying our club’.

And speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit, Boehly was asked for his response to the recent criticism from the Blues supporters.

“It’s par for the course,” he said. “The reality is the sooner you learn you’re not going to keep all the people happy all the time, freedom shows up from that.

“We are trying to execute a plan. The trend is moving in the right direction. That’s what really matters.

“What we were really thinking about is how you put together a team that has the ability to stay together.

“When you read about the teams who were the dynasties over the years, they had superstar captains that really led them. What you’re trying to find is that superstar captain.”

Blues boss Enzo Maresca also responded to the fan protests after his side’s 4-0 win over Southampton.

“First of all, I was focused on the game so I didn’t know about outside,” Maresca said.

“The only thing I can say at this moment is that I think the fans have to trust (us) because we are in the right process, we are in the right direction.

“I said many times that since we start, I think we have been in the top four or Champions League spots for most games of the season.

“That means we are in the right direction, the club is in the right direction, and especially, I think they have to trust the players because the players are doing a huge effort every day to bring this club where this club has to be, that’s in the Champions League.”
