Charlton Athletic could benefit from making a January deadline day signing similar to the one they made in 2022.

Charlton Athletic may be looking to bring in a new signing before the end of the transfer window.

The Addicks have often been active during the final days of the January transfer window in the past, with Kayne Ramsay's arrival from Harrogate Town last year an example of a late signing that the club has made.

There is a consensus among the supporters that a creative midfielder would benefit the Addicks in their bid to finish in the League One play-off places at the end of the season.

Therefore, if Charlton were to make a signing similar to the one they made on deadline day of the January transfer window in 2022, it would not only potentially make a difference on the pitch, but it would also provide a boost to the supporters going into the back end of the season.

On deadline day of the January transfer window in 2022, Charlton found themselves 14th in League One and 13 points adrift of the top six, but it did not stop them spending a significant transfer fee to add to their squad.

The Addicks paid a fee in the region of £500,000 to sign midfielder Scott Fraser from Ipswich Town, and while the Scotsman did not manage to help the club return to the Championship during his time in SE7, Charlton fans would welcome a similar level of ambition and investment in the final days of the current transfer window.

As things stand, the Addicks are within touching distance of the top six in the third tier, so if they manage to bring in a player who could improve the squad, then it could be the difference between promotion back to the Championship and another season in League One.

Of course, it would be unwise to spend a transfer fee like the one that was spent on Fraser if there is nobody available that will bolster Nathan Jones' squad, but there is no doubt that an ambitious signing before the end of the month would ignite optimism at The Valley ahead of the final few months of the campaign.

Scott Fraser was inconsistent at The Valley

Admittedly, Fraser did not always live up to his price tag during his time in a red shirt, although he did have a few memorable moments while playing for Charlton.

His standout season was the 2022/23 campaign, when the Addicks finished 10th in League One and reached the quarter-final of the EFL Cup under Dean Holden, with the 29-year-old a key part of the team alongside the likes of George Dobson, Miles Leaburn and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

Unfortunately, he was fairly ineffective in his final season at The Valley, and he now plays for Dundee, although he has only played three times for the Scottish club this season following his arrival in the summer.

There is no doubt that if Charlton were to make a signing in the mould of Fraser's before the end of the transfer window, they would hope that the player could have a greater overall impact, but a similar level of ambition and investment in the coming days would certainly be welcome in SE7, especially as the Addicks are in and around the promotion picture this time around.
