“Certainly Keeping An Eye On Him.” – Paul Gorst On Liverpool Linked Ace Who Carra Thinks Is ‘Superb’ | OneFootball

We spoke to the Liverpool FC Correspondent at the Liverpool Echo, Paul Gorst, regarding the Reds’ current situation at left-back for the latest episode of Journo Insight this week.

Andy Robertson is undeniably in the toughest run of his Reds career with nothing seeming to go his way, but Gorst described the criticism of the Scotland captain as “harsh”.

In the 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield, he misscontrolled and then denied Harry Wilson a goal-scoring opportunity with the referee brandishing a red card.

Strikingly, it was his 600th appearance for club and country.

Gorst said: “It’s a lot of football in the tank, particularly for his style and the way he plays as left-back, motoring down the line, up and down all game, particularly during the peak Klopp years.

“He has covered some ground over his career. There is a question: is it catching up on him? Is he on the wain, the slide?”

Meanwhile, the visitors’ US international left-back Antonee Robinson was their best player, assisting first Raul Jimenez and then Rodrigo Muniz.

But on Robinson, Gorst did say: “He’ll be 28 before next season. That is too old for Liverpool to be paying £30, £40 million. I just don’t see it happening.

“I do think he is a good player and he has come leaps and bounds while he has been playing for Fulham, but the age is the big red flag.”

Alfonso Davies’ Bayern Munich contract expires in July, but there are questions about injury and wage.

Accordingly, Milos Kerkez of AFC Bournemouth is emerging as the prime candidate if Liverpool are to sign a new left-back.

Kerkez signed for Bournemouth when Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes was the Cherries’ Technical Director.

Gorst added: “Liverpool will certainly be keeping an eye on how he is getting on.

“(He is) one to watch for the long term, I would suggest on that one because I think he is having a really good season.

“Every time I see him, he looks to be really technically accomplished, a good bit of pace to him, gets up and down and he seems to have that delivery with the final ball which is so important for a full-back.”

Finally, on Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Gorst said: “He fits the profile in terms of the age and the quality.

“Rayan Ait-Nouri seems to be a player whose star is on the rise at a struggling Wolves at the moment.

“If Liverpool are looking properly at this left-back situation, maybe from the summer onwards, I would not be shocked to hear his name was near the front of the shortlist.”

Robertson has been a stalwart in the team since 2017, but Liverpool must start preparing for life after the player they nickname “Robbo” and whilst a January move seems farfetched right now, next summer certainly poses a potential shift in thinking.

Davies for free would be one hell of a coup, a 24-year-old with such a wealth of experience and quality, however, in terms of more ‘Liverpool-type deals’, Kerkez – described as ‘superb’ by Jamie Carragher – makes an abundance of sense.
