Celtic 2-3 Feyenoord. This was a friendly match to honour the Lisbon Lions who had brought the European Cup back to Paradise in 1967. Surviving members of the team were greeted in front of a 22,300 crowd before the game. Leading the line for Feyenoord was ex-Celt Pierre van Hooijdonk, and it was the big Dutchman who fired past David Marshall for the game’s opening goal. It was Martin O’Neill’s first match in charge since agreeing a new 12-month rolling contract. The Irishman made wholesale changes for the second half.

Albion Rovers 0-3 Celtic. It was now 25 domestic matches unbeaten since the beginning of the season for Brendan Rodgers’ side. This Scottish Cup fourth round encounter was played at the Excelsior Stadium rather than at Cliftonhill in order to accommodate more supporters. Three of Celtic’s stars of the Invincible season; Sinclair, Dembele and Armstrong all on the scoresheet. Famously, post-match Rod Stewart did the fifth-round draw with Alan Stubbs and SFA President Alan McRae which sparked chaos after Rod had one to many…

Celtic 2-0 Motherwell. Stan Petrov and Chris Sutton’s strike’s in either half allowed Martin O’Neill’s men to open up a six-point gap at the top of the SPL over Rangers. Ex-Celtic Gordon Marshall lined up for Motherwell in goal whilst Barry John Corr, a former Celtic academy graduate, was the substitute keeper for the Steelmen.

Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich. A recognition of Peter Grant’s 15-year service to the club which saw the midfielder earn 470 Celtic appearances. In the end, it was a nice little earner for Grant. After his testimonial, he said, “my testimonial night will live with me forever. I have never felt so humble in my life. I have played 470 games for Celtic, but believe me, if I had pulled on the jersey just once, I would have been a proud man.”

Celtic 4-1 Hibs. Billy McNeill’s experiment of playing McCluskey, McGarvey and Nicholas at the same time paid off as the trio scored four goals between them. Hibs’ goalkeeper Alan Rough wore the smart black and red New Zealand jersey he had swapped with the New Zealand goalkeeper after Scotland’s match against the Kiwi’s in a World Cup encounter in June 1982.

Celtic 4-0 Dundee United. Gary Hooper bagged a brace in a convincing victory for Neil Lennon’s side amidst rumours of a departure from Celtic Park for the 24 year-old Englishman. The Hoops hierarchy had knocked back two offers from Norwich City as Celtic tried to get the best price possible for their star man. Featuring for Peter Houston’s Dundee United side were future Celts Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.

Kilmarnock 1-3 Celtic. This was Celtic’s first game since their defeat to theRangers in their final game of 2019. Momentum had shifted to the other side of the city so this victory at a difficult away venue in recent seasons for Celtic restored confidence. Neil Lennon’s Quadruple Treble chasers remained two in front of the Ibrox club, but Steven Gerrard’s rejuvenated side had a game in hand.
Alloa Athletic 1-2 Celtic. Ange Postecoglou went up against Barry Ferguson in the dugouts which added a twist to this fourth round Scottish Cup tie. Giakoumakis and Abada were on the scoresheet for Celtic. Yosuke Ideguchi was on the receiving end of a horrendous tackle. Callum McGregor was substituted in the first half following a head knock. Subsequently, Cal wore a face protector for the rest of the season.

Willie Loney scored
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1910 – Celtic approach this Scottish Cup tie at Boghead, Dumbarton with a few qualms, for it was not all that long ago that Dumbarton’s ground was called “fatal Boghead”. But Dumbarton have now fallen on bad times and are now in the Second Division. A giant-killing was feared but Celtic won through 2-1 with goals from Willie Loney and Jimmy McMenemy. The crowd was 10,000 with many trains arriving from Glasgow.
Andy McAtee scored twice
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1916 – The weather is predictably miserable and the war shows no sign of ending, but for those 10,000 who turn up at Cathkin to see Celtic take on Third Lanark. Celtic give some light relief and entertainment in the shape of a 4-0 defeat of the home side with two goals from Andy McAtee, one from Jimmy McColl and a penalty from Joe Dodds.
Jackie Gallacher scored twice
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1949 – The luckless Celtic go out of the Scottish Cup to Second Division Dundee United at the primitive Tannadice Park before a huge crowd of 22,000. Seven goals are scored but Celtic are always chasing the game and it ends up 4-3 for United. For Celtic, Jackie Gallacher scores twice and Charlie Tully once, but it is not enough. United’s star man is goalkeeper Alex Edmiston.
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1966 – An excellent example today of the old adage that League titles are won by grinding out results rather than champagne football, as Celtic labour to a 1-0 win over Motherwell, the goal coming from Joe McBride. Celtic lost last week to Aberdeen and are about to embark to Georgia to play Dinamo Kiev, so a good result was vital.
SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1983 – An excellent 4-1 win over Hibs at Celtic Park today with two goals from Frank McGarvey and one each from Charlie Nicholas and George McCluskey. A disappointing feature is the poor attendance of 17,108. The weather is not great, but one would have expected a little more to see a game between these two.
