Kasper Schmeichel saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo at the weekend. But what should have been a memorable night turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. Not only did Demark lose 5-2 to Portugal, but the Celtic goalkeeper ended up picking up an injury as well. One that looks set to keep him out for the foreseeable future.

Schmeichel appeared to pick up a shoulder injury in the first half of extra-time and was in visible pain. But Denmark had already used up all their substitutions.

Schmeichel leaving would mean that Denmark would not only have to play with ten men, but one of the outfield players would have to fill in as goalkeeper. So, the Dane bravely decided to finish the match even with his injury, which possibly might have worsened the issue.

Schmeichel has been spotted in a sling since then. Celtic fans were hoping that the issue was not serious and that he would be back available before the end of the season. But unfortunately, it looks like the Danish goalkeeper will be out for a while if reports coming out of the Danish media are accurate.

As reported by Danish media outlet Nyheder 24 (via The Celtic Way), the issue 'is not a minor injury'. Their report states that there is a question mark over the availability of Schmeichel's fitness for the next international break in September when they will face Scotland on September 5.

Of course, if accurate, then that is terrible news. That means that not only will Schmeichel miss the rest of this season but he could be out for part of the next one as well.

In this scenario, Celtic have to consider signing a goalkeeper in the summer. Schmeichel is in the twilight of his career and it remains to be seen how he recovers from an issue of this magnitude.
