Today’s Huddle

With five minutes on the clock, Glasgow City looked the most threatening as Caitlin Hayes had to clear their first real attempt off the line.

15 minutes later, we almost went down once again as Kelsey Daugherty failed to catch a loose ball, allowing a City attacker to latch onto it. They blazed it over the bar though, seeing the scoreline remain goalless in the opening stages.

Celtic got their first proper attempt of the game as Murphy Agnew was sent sprinting after Caitlin Hayes booted it up the park to spark a counter attack. The American managed to get onto the pass, but she put it well over the bar.

And Hayes continued to impact the game with as we approached the break, heading it towards goal from a corner. The City goalkeeper was forced to knock it over the bar, but the referee awarded a goal kick.

The second half got underway and both teams came out fighting to open the scoring. Hayes almost sent Agnew through on goal again but it was cleared by City, and shortly after, the visitors come close to the first goal but Daugherty sees it off.

But a few minutes later, the game changed as Maria McAneny burst through on goal. The City defence had no choice but to stop the threatening attack with a foul, bringing the forward down in the area. The referee pointed to the spot, awarding a penalty to the Celts.

Chloe Craig stepped up to the spot and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, cooly converting for her first goal of the season.

A quiet game for the next 20 minutes but then things got scrappy. City were really pushing for an equaliser and almost found it on a few occasions.

Still though, Celtic continued to threaten in their final third, with Jenny Smith playing an advanced role, pressing high and using her pace to her advantage.

In our half, City continued to threaten but good pressure from the defence ensured that they made mistakes.

In the final stages, Smith intercepted a sloppy pass from a City defender, setting up Mathilde Carstens in a brilliant position. Mathilde shot it well but it was a simple save for the goalkeeper in the end.

And as the game approached the final whistle, City had one final chance to equalise. They shot at the goalkeeper and although Daugherty saved, the ball spilled and it looked as though they were sure to score. Hayes got back and cleared it from danger, hoofing it up the park to kill off City’s hopes.

A brilliant three points in an incredibly tense derby match against two good sides. Elena Sadiku’s side will take the confidence of this victory into Wednesday’s match against Motherwell.

Analysis and comment to follow tomorrow.
